[sticky post]ABOUT THIS JOURNAL
nyanja14

This livejournal began life as an account for an university class in the spring semester of 2012: ENC3930, Introduction to Fandom Studies. I had LJs before in the past, but never got into the swing of continuously maintaining one until that class. During that semester, this journal was my home base for fandom and Nabari no Ou, the fandom I explored for my project.

Now that the semester is over, I find that I am attached to this account and I would like to continue using it. Thus, I will be moving my non-Nabari fanfiction that I still consider active over here and hopefully continue on with my writing in other fandoms.

I don't know what the future will bring for me and this journal, but I am very excited to meet it.

Yaoi & Me: An Uneasy Relationship
nyanja14

Yaoi*, I've got something important to say to you.

See, I like you. I really do. It's not something I admit very often outside of the internet, but that doesn't make it any less true.

But, yaoi? You've got some problems.

[RAM] #3: All My Darling Daughters

Rambling About Manga #3: All My Darling Daughters

All My Darling Daughters by Fumi Yoshinaga
Published in Japan by Hakusensha in 2003
Published by Viz Media as part of the Signature imprint in 2010
I own the complete series, it is only one volume long.
Personal Rating: 10/10

Summary from Viz:
Fumi Yoshinaga weaves together the disparate lives of Yukiko and her friends in five short stories, exploring the women’s various relationships with the skill and elegance she is famous for.

Yukiko, a salarywoman in her thirties, still lives with her mother Mari. But their relationship suffers a sudden change when Mari announces that she’s getting married—to an ex-host and aspiring actor who’s younger than Yukiko. Yukiko, convinced he’s out to fleece her mom, can’t stand to stay in the house and decides to move in with her boyfriend.

Fumi Yoshinaga has become such a staple in my manga reading that it is kind of hard to imagine a time when I didn’t read everything she wrote. But such a time existed. My first exposure to Fumi Yoshinaga was through Antique Bakery, which I absolutely love and is still probably my favorite of her work. After that, I read some of her yaoi short story anthologies and then I thought, “Okay, that was good, let’s go read something else now.” It didn’t really occur to me to check and see if Fumi Yoshinaga had written anything else outside of BL and yaoi.

I heard about All My Darling Daughters through a webcomic artist that I admire, E.K. Weaver of The Less Than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal fame. She had some very nice things to say about the book, so I stuck it on my amazon wish list and forgot about it.

[RAM] #2: xxxHolic

Rambling About Manga #2: xxxHolic

xxxHolic by CLAMP
Published in Japan by Kodansha between 2003 to 2011
Published by Del Rey between 2004 to 2012
I own the complete series, which is nineteen volumes long.
Personal Rating: 10/10

Summary from Del Rey:
Watanuki Kimihiro is haunted by visions of ghosts and spirits. Seemingly by chance, he encounters a mysterious witch named Yuuko, who claims she can help. In desperation, he accepts, but realizes that he’s just been tricked into working for Yuuko in order to pay off the cost of her services. Soon he’s employed in her little shop—a job which turns out to be nothing like his previous work experience!

Most of Yuuko’s customers live in Japan, but Yuuko and Watanuki are about to have some unusual visitors named Sakura and Syaoran from a land called Clow…

I love cute, happy, Cardcaptor Sakura CLAMP a lot, but I love dark, atmospheric Tokyo Babylon CLAMP even more. And xxxHolic is that kind of CLAMP at its best, in my opinion.

I began reading xxxHolic because I was already reading its sister series Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle. As a fan, I like TRC better, but the reader and critic inside me acknowledges that xxxHolic is probably the stronger series.

[RAM] #1: Fullmetal Alchemist

Rambling About Manga #1: Fullmetal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist by Hiromu Arakawa
Published in Japan by Square Enix between 2001 to 2010
Published by Viz Media between 2005 to 2011
I own the complete series, which is twenty-seven volumes.
Personal Rating: 10/10

Summary from Viz Media:
In an alchemical ritual gone wrong, Edward Elric lost his arm and his leg, and his brother Alphonse became nothing but a soul in a suit of armor. Equipped with mechanical “auto-mail” limbs, Edward becomes a state alchemist, seeking the one thing that can restore his and his brother’s bodies…the legendary Philosopher’s Stone.

So one night, I was at the birthday party of a girl who would one day be one of my best friends. I was bored (as I often am at parties) so I went to her room and started looking through some books she had lying around on her bed. She had several volumes of a manga series that she checked out from the library and I recognized the character on the cover, so I picked up the first volume and started reading.

It seems kind of dumb to say, but this is true: my entire life changed that night.
